Paper costs scale with three multipliers: number of products (SKUs), number of language versions and frequency of changes. A single safety-related update can trigger reprints across an entire portfolio. With eIFU the cost structure flips: you pay for the platform and digitization once, and updates or new languages are marginal. The larger and more multilingual the portfolio, the faster the switch pays for itself.
eIFU is not a universal replacement. Devices intended for lay users still require paper instructions, and professional users must be able to request a free paper copy — Regulation (EU) 2021/2226 keeps these safeguards in place.
